I'm going to try and keep images updated at my Flickr site.
Basically the sculpture will be a life sized baby elephant shooting sweaters onto larger than life size geese who will be hanging from the ceiling. It will be installed in the entrance atrium at the Vinson Neighborhood Library. Hopefully sometime this summer 2010. The sweaters for the geese are based on the colors of tropical birds which can be found in the tropical bird house at the Houston Zoo.
To go along with this sculpture I am hiring a writer and illustrator to produce a children's book which will atempt to explain the story behind the sweater covered elephant and geese. J.D.Ho is my writer, who i've worked with before, and I am so excited she agreed to help me again. And Rene Cruz, whose illustrations I love, will be doing the images for the book. The book will then be available in the library for people to check out and read. I am really excited to see the book come together. Hopefully it doesn't completely overshadow the sculpture with its awesomeness. I am going to try and keep a record of this Neighborhood Library public commission through this blog. I will update with photos of progress and what not, and you can see the level of crazy crocheting thats about to start and continue for the next few months.
To begin I guess I will talk a little about the commission for those who don't know. It is a commission for a permanent public sculpture in the Vinson Neighborhood Library here in Houston, TX. It was commissioned by the City of Houston, through the Houston Arts Alliance. Back in the summer of 2009 I submitted images and a resume and was chosen as one of three artists to do a full proposal for the library project. My proposal was chosen, and since then its been contracts, insurance, invoices, animal fabrication, and slow progress. Finally its about to be my time for serious working. Geese are being completed, the baby elephant is is its final stages of production, and yarn has been bought. Tomorrow I begin to crochet! |
